¿Qué significa que un tejido de yute pese 10 onzas?

What does it mean that a jute fabric weighs 10 ounces?

May 29, 2025

When we talk about jute fabrics, one of the most frequently mentioned terms is the weight in ounces. But what exactly is an ounce, and what does it tell us about the quality or strength of a fabric?

What is an ounce?

The ounce (oz) is an Anglo-Saxon unit of measurement used to indicate the weight per square yard of a fabric. It is very common in the textile sector, especially when working with natural fibres such as jute.

1 ounce (oz) = 28.35 g / square yard (0.836 m²)

How does this translate to jute fabrics?

In the case of jute, the weight in ounces determines whether the fabric is lighter or more resistant:

  • 6 oz fabric → Very light. Ideal for crafts, decoration, or small bags.

  • 10 oz fabric → Medium weight. Very versatile, perfect for sacks, linings, decoration, etc.

  • 14 oz fabric or more → Heavy. Recommended for industrial uses, rustic upholstery, or geotextiles.

Equivalent in grams per square metre

Although ounces are common in international trade, in Europe we usually use g/m². Here is a comparison table:
