How to remove odors from jute fabric: causes, solutions and mistakes to avoid

October 23, 2026

Jute is a plant-based fiber that may have its own distinctive smell, particularly when new or after storage. This guide explains how to freshen burlap without damaging it.

Why does jute fabric smell?

The odor may come from the fiber itself, storage conditions, trapped moisture or manufacturing finishes. A mild natural smell is not necessarily a defect. A persistent musty smell or visible stains, however, may indicate damp storage.

1. Air the fabric in a dry, ventilated place

Unfold the fabric and allow air to circulate on both sides. Protect it from rain, dew and extended intense sunlight, especially if dyed. Do not store it until completely dry.

2. Remove surface dust

Gently shake the fabric or use a vacuum at low power. Avoid pulling the weave or damaging delicate finishes.

3. Should you use baking soda, vinegar or perfume?

Do not routinely apply powders, vinegar, perfume or essential oils directly to jute: they can leave marks, residue or change finishes. Check product-specific care guidance and test any compatible treatment on a spare piece first.

4. When the smell is musty

Check the storage area for leaks and inspect the fabric for moisture, stains or mold. Separate affected fabric from other stock. If mold is suspected, seek professional advice; airing alone may not resolve the problem.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Soaking fabric to mask odors
  • Storing it while damp
  • Using bleach or harsh cleaners
  • Leaving dyed fabric in intense sunlight for long periods
  • Spraying perfume directly onto burlap

Keeping jute fresh

Store clean rolls above floor level in a dry, well-ventilated place and check regularly for condensation or water leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a smell normal in new jute?

A mild plant-fiber smell can be normal; a strong persistent musty smell should be investigated.

How long until the odor disappears?

There is no universal timeframe; the cause, ventilation and fabric type all matter.

Can I wash it?

Not always. Wetting jute can cause shrinkage or distortion. Read our jute cleaning guide first.
