There are 3 ways to eliminate the smell from jute fabric:
For a mild odor, simply spread the burlap fabric outdoors and let it air out on the ground for a few hours. Make sure it is placed in a shaded area, as sun or rain can discolor and damage the fabric since it is a natural material.
If the odor persists, there is another alternative. Place the jute fabric on a flat surface and sprinkle the entire burlap with baking soda. If it is a sack, spread the baking soda inside. Let it sit for 2 to 4 days. Then shake the burlap thoroughly to remove all the baking soda.
If the smell has not dissipated sufficiently, you can choose another option. Soak the jute or jute sack in a solution of vinegar and water for two or three minutes. Prepare the solution with 80% water and 20% vinegar.
Be sure to dilute the vinegar properly, as its acidity could damage the fabric.
Rinse the burlap with cold water under the tap. Allow the fabric to air dry between two clean, dry towels until it is completely dry.
Important: Do not combine this method with the previous one, as the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar can damage the fiber.
